Research Programs for URM Students

Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Engineering:

SURE is a 9-week program at UW-Madison that connects students who have completed their sophomore or junior years with a research mentor and a research team. For Advanced Opportunity Fellowship (AOF)-eligible students only.

Undergraduate Scholarship Program at the NIH:

UGSP offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program offers: scholarship support, paid research training at the NIH during the summer, and paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation.

Other Summer Research Programs:

• Harvard University and Harvard Medical School offer three summer programs for students from underrepresented groups. The Summer Honors Undergraduate Research Program (SHURP) and the Summer Clinical and Translational Research Program (SCTRP) are geared toward biomedical research. The Four Directions Summer Research Program (FDSRP) is designed specifically for Native-American students.
• Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School offer the Summer Training in Academic Research and Scholarship (STARS) program for students interested in medical research.
• Summer Undergraduate Research Program for Underrepresented Students (SURPUS) offers a 10-week summer research and enrichment program for underrepresented minority students interested in M.D./Ph.D. or D.O./Ph.D degrees.
• Cornell Medical College offers the Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program to give premedical students deeper insights into the field of medicine, including issues that greatly affect the health of traditionally underserved groups.
• Weill Cornell, Rockefeller, and Sloan-Kettering’s Gateways to the Laboratory Summer Program offers exciting research opportunities for students interested in M.D./Ph.D. programs.
• The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program offers hands-on experience guided by a biomedical science faculty mentor.
• Yale University's BioSTEP Program is a 10 week summer program in mentored research with weekly seminars and workshops.
• The Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University offers an array of programs, both research and clinical, for undergraduates from underrepresented groups.
• The University of Cincinnati College Of Medicine offers the Summer Premedical Enrichment Program (SPEP) and the Summer Research Scholarships.
• The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) offers a Summer Research Training Program.
• Oregon Health & Science University’s Equity Summer Research Program offers students the opportunity to engage in biomedical research.
• Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Diversity Summer Internship Program (DSIP).
• Diversity Summer Health-related Research Education Program (DSHREP) is a 10-week summer fellowship for students interested in the areas of cardiovascular, pulmonary and hematological research is available to resident and non-resident undergraduate, graduate and medical students from diverse backgrounds.
• The University Of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine offers two summer opportunities: PSOMER (Pritzker School of Medicine Experience in Research) and CAMP (Chicago Academic Medicine Program).
